What is Frame Running?
For many people, running is something that is taken for granted. For individuals with mobility impairments, however, opportunities to experience the freedom, excitement and sense of achievement that running can bring are often limited.
Frame Running is changing that. Using a specially designed running frame, children and adults with additional needs can move independently, improve their fitness and participate in recreational and competitive sport. As the sport continues to grow internationally, so too does awareness of the physical, psychological and social benefits it can offer.
Physical benefits of Frame Running
Research suggests that regular participation in Frame Running can support improvements in cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength and endurance for individuals with mobility impairments, including those with cerebral palsy. Studies have also reported increased stamina and skeletal muscle development following structured training programmes. Participation may also support coordination and functional mobility, enabling individuals to travel further and engage more actively in physical activity.
For individuals with limited walking ability, Frame Running can provide an accessible way to take part in meaningful exercise and experience the benefits of movement.
Psychological benefits
Alongside physical activity, participation in sport can have important psychological benefits. Athletes involved in Frame Running often report increased confidence, motivation and independence. Research exploring athlete experiences has also identified improvements in quality of life, particularly where individuals are able to take part in regular activity and experience the enjoyment of movement and achievement. For many participants, the ability to move independently and take part in sport can play an important role in supporting self-esteem and wellbeing.
Social participation and connection
Frame Running can also create valuable opportunities for social interaction and community participation. Training sessions, clubs and events allow athletes to meet peers, develop friendships and share experiences with others. Participation in organised activities can help individuals and families feel connected to a supportive sporting community while encouraging regular outdoor activity and shared experiences.
A Growing Opportunity for Participation
Whether the goal is improved fitness, greater independence or simply the opportunity to take part alongside others, Frame Running continues to open doors for people of all ages and abilities. As awareness grows and more events become available, increasing numbers of athletes are discovering the benefits that movement, sport and participation can bring.
Looking Ahead
With Frame Running set to feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games, awareness of the sport continues to grow. More clubs, coaches and athletes are discovering how Frame Running can support physical activity, participation and competitive sport.
